British Chancellor George Osborne has a bold vision to create a Northern Powerhouse that would bring economic prosperity and better balance the UK economy. Proposals call for major investment in transport, science and innovation, plus the devolution of civic powers. This event asked the question: what if energy policy was also devolved – how would we develop a strategy that could power the Northern Powerhouse? Ian Jackson discussed the potential role of nuclear technology within the Northern Powerhouse including the development of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) and growing nuclear trade links with China.
University of Manchester Policy Week, November 2015
Ian Jackson lectured on nuclear business to senior school students (15 – 18 years old) attending the University of Manchester’s Nuclear Engineering Summer School. The four-day event was organized by the Smallpiece Trust and aimed to introduce students to a range of nuclear engineering issues, help them develop new skills and give them a feel for university life. A special Question Time event gave the students a chance to quiz a panel of academic and industry specialists including Ian Jackson and the Dalton Nuclear Institute’s Scientific Director, Prof Melissa Denecke.
